Tubac
Arizona's oldest European settlement, Tubac was once the site of a Spanish presidio. It is now a thriving artist and artisan colony 45 miles south of Tucson. Known as the place "where art and history meet," Tubac has more than 70 unusual shops with everything from sturdy hand-hewn cabinets and pottery to delicate silk-screened scarves and paintings. Stop by the Santa Cruz Chile Factory to sample unusual specialties like cactus candy and jalapeno ice cream.
Nogales
About 65 miles south of Tucson, the twin border cities of Nogales (Arizona and Sonora, Mexico) offer hundreds of curios shops and plenty of opportunities for bargain hunting, especially if you're willing to haggle for the best price. Nogales is a great place for leather, liquor, jewelry, house wares and clothes. Merchants won't be shy about bargaining with you in this marketplace atmosphere.
