    What's New in Tucson - April 2005

Tucson's 23rd Annual International Mariachi Conference... Mexican folk music known as mariachi takes center stage April 19-23rd as Tucson plays host to this yearly ritual. The conference brings together world famous mariachis and baile folklórico groups as well as giving hundreds of students of all ages the opportunity to attend workshops and be totally immersed in the music taught by their idols. Thousands of Hummers are his Special Guests... A Southern Arizona man plays host to the largest number of hummingbirds ever seen in one spot in the United States. Jesse Hendrix bands and tracks the hummers from year to year and says he knows that some of the little birds have been regular's at his ranch for 10 years. Peak season is April to October, but Jesse says August and the first part of September are when there are literally thousands of hummingbirds visiting him daily. Jesse doesn't mind guests coming to see the birds, but his ranch is a little hidden near the Mexican border. Call and Jesse will give your directions himself. (520) 287-8615.

Tucson's Oldest Resort Gets a New Chef ... Jamie West is the new Executive Chef at  Westward Look Resort & Spa. Jamie grew up in Tucson, is a James Beard Award winner, and his culinary resume includes stints at the San Ysidro Ranch in California, and the Manchester House in Connecticut. Jamie is a huge fan of the slow food movement and will be expanding the resort's already extensive fruit, vegetable, and herb garden.

Southwest Airlines Adds Tucson Service ... Southwest Airlines is adding a daily non-stop flight between Chicago Midway and Tucson beginning July 5th. Introductory fares are selling for $99 roundtrip. Tourism in Tucson Goes Way Back... Among the oldest businesses in the Tucson area are the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch (1868), Santa Rita Hotel (1904), Hotel Congress (1919), and El Charro Café & Bar (1922).

Tombstone's Historic Rose Tree... The world's largest rose tree, as confirmed by the folks at the Guiness Book, will be blooming this year for the 120th time. This historic rose tree, a Lady Banks variety, now covers more than 8,000 square feet and warrants a yearly festival when she blooms. Festivities in Tombstone, Arizona are scheduled for the weekend of April 8. Cuttings of the tree are available in the gift shop.

Former Girls Schools Rated One of America's Finest Hotels...  Zagat this year named Hacienda del Sol one of the finest hotels in America, calling the former private girls school "vintage" and "classic" with some of the best dining in Tucson. Hacienda del Sol opened in 1929 and educated girls from some of the US's most wealthy families. In the 1940's it became a guest ranch and Hollywood stars soon became regulars. In fact, legend has it this is where Spencer Tracy first fell in love with Katherine Hepburn.

Tucson Tidbit... Tucson is situated 2,389 feet above sea level, and the metro Tucson area covers more than 500 square miles. Arizona does not follow daylight savings time. April through October Arizona time mirrors Pacific Daylight Time.
