Tucson's Historic Gem Trade. A display at the Arizona State Museum brings to life the intricate history of gems and minerals in Southern Arizona. "Set in Stone: 2000 Years of Gem and Mineral Trade in the Southwest" explains how Tucson has become a mecca for gem traders throughout the world. Over the past 54 years, the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase has grown exponentially, along with its impact on the local economy. But the lure of the minerals beneath Tucson's soil has generated trade for much longer. Gems, minerals, copper, seashells and other exotic goods have been carried across the Southwest along well-worn routes for more than 2000 years. "Set in Stone" explains this long history in great detail, featuring 800 objects and audio-visual displays. The exhibit runs December 2007-February 2010.
