 Chile Fest in Downtown Tucson

(TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sept. 16, 2008) -- A Southwestern harvest-time tradition will capture center-stage as the second annual "Chile Fest: Ristra Madness" takes place during the final weekend of September at Old Town Artisans, located in the historic Presidio District just north of the Old Pima County Courthouse.

Sponsored by Old Town Artisans merchant El Chile Loco, the event will feature the latest crop of Hatch New Mexico green chiles, fresh chile roasting and pristine chile ristras (strings) for purchase. In addition, the 11 AM to 7 PM Saturday and Sunday September 27th and 28th event will highlight salsa tasting, including an exclusive new creation by Salsa Timoteo.

To add to the festivities, local vendors Real Tortilleria and Panaderia will offer fresh tortillas and tamales, Indian fry bread, "Sage Ceramic Gifts", "Five Star Jerky" along with locally made prickly pear wreaths and ristras.  A roasted green chile-eating contest will be held Sunday at 3 PM. while a clown providing face painting and balloon animals will be on hand both days.

Capping the family-oriented "Chile Fest" celebration will be live music provided by internationally celebrated Mexican harpist Francisco Gonzales as well as mariachi soloist Josefina Gallegos.

"Chile Fest: Ristra Madness" will be held in the lush courtyard of Old Town Artisans, located at 201 North Court Avenue. Weekend on-street parking is always free in the historic Presidio District, the vibrant birthplace of Tucson.

Additional festival information can be obtained by contacting Johanna directly at El Chile Loco... 520-299-1414 or www.elpresidio@earthlink.net.

Old Town Artisans is located in the El Presidio Historic District and occupies an entire little city block. The 150 year-old adobe building has six distinctive shops and galleries, which feature traditional and contemporary art and fine craft from hundreds of local and regional artists. The Spanish style courtyard and patio offer a relaxing place to enjoy a meal or beverage amidst regional plants and trees.

Present-day Old Town Artisans is located on the site of El Presidio San Augustin del Tucson, the fort built by the Spanish in 1775 to stake claim to the northern frontier of New Spain. The current location was the stables area and the north wall is the setting from which Apache attacks were repelled.
