TUCSON CELEBRATES HISTORIC ARRIVAL
OF FATHER EUSEBIO FRANCISCO KINO
Tucson, Ariz., October 22, 2008 - The Patronato de Kino, a not-for-profit organization, will celebrate the First International Festival called "LA ENTRADA DE KINO" on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 9 a.m. at the west bank of the Santa Cruz River at Congress Street near downtown Tucson.
La Entrada means The Entrance. The main event will be a re-enactment of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino's entrance to Tucson. Members of the O'odham and Pasqua Yaqui tribes will accompany him. A cabalgata, a procession of horsemen, from local equestrian groups will follow. The two tribes will honor Father Kino with traditional music and dance.
Following the Entrada, presentations in English and Spanish about Padre Kino and the environment in the Pimeria Alta, the world and New Spain will be given at the Sentinel Building on Bonita Street. In addition to local anthropologists and historians, historians from Magdalena de Kino and Hermosillo, Sonora will also participate. The talks are targeted for a wide audience of all ages. Music and art exhibits from Tucson and Sonora will enhance the celebration.
Father Kino, a Jesuit missionary, was a man of peace who worked tirelessly to promote peace in Northern Sonora and Southern Arizona. He introduced cattle, horse breeding, wheat and many fruits such as figs, pomegranates and grapes to the region.
The Patronato de Kino, cognizant to today's difficult times, has organized this festival to encourage all to follow Father Kino's legacy of peace and co-existence.
The full program for the festival is being developed and will be available at the Patronato's web site: http://www.patronatodekino.com/.
