Celebrate New Year's Eve with FIRST NIGHT in Downtown Tucson


TUCSON, Ariz. (Nov. 24, 2008) -- Celebrate the New Year in downtown Tucson with FIRST NIGHT -- a celebration of arts, culture and community -- presented by the Downtown Tucson Partnership.

This family-friendly and alcohol-free festival will bring together Tucsonans of all ages in a welcoming atmosphere to enjoy multicultural music, dance, comedy, magic, children's activities and more! Everyone is invited to share the fun and anticipation as the evening builds toward a grand finale of spectacular sights and sounds at midnight!

 
WHEN? 4 p.m. to midnight on Dec. 31, 2008.


WHERE?
Seven locations in Downtown Tucson:

The Leo Rich Theater at TCC, Scottish Rite Temple and Beowulf Alley Theatre are ticketed venues featuring varied entertainment including Hispanic roots music and dance, bluegrass, jazz, blues and world music, comedy and more. The Fox Tucson Theatre will screen movies, including children's features from 4-6 p.m.

La Placita Village and the Leo Rich Theater Plaza will feature continuous FREE entertainment during the festival. The Tucson Children's Museum will present FREE entertainment outdoors from 4-8 p.m. A festival badge will allow attendees inside the Children's Museum for numerous hands-on activities.


COST?
Admission buttons are $12 for adults, $6 for children 6-12 and free for little ones 5 and younger. Paid admission allows entry into ALL venues. Buttons will go on sale Dec. 3 at all Tucson locations of Bookmans and Food City, the Fox Theatre and online at www.downtowntucson.org.


FESTIVAL LOWDOWN

  • Tickets for First Night are colorful event buttons that are to be worn during the festival. Each year to come will feature a new design, instantly becoming a fun New Year's Eve collectible.
  • First Night is alcohol-free to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere. Most venues will have food and beverages available for purchase.
  • Performances are 45 minutes. Venue seating during the festival is first come, first served. Audiences will be cleared from the venue after each show allowing those next in line to grab a seat.
  • Street parking will be FREE Downtown starting at 3 p.m., courtesy of Parkwise.
  • FREE party favors will set a festive mood, courtesy of Cox Communications (while supplies last).
  • Need assistance at the festival? Volunteers will be stationed throughout Downtown to answer questions and offer directions. Look for them in First Night t-shirts with blinking lighted pins.

4 p.m. TSO Just For Kids - Josephina the Javelina (a musical adventure)

5 p.m.: TBD

6 p.m.: Nelly y Javier (acoustic romantic harmonies)

7 p.m.: Ballet Folklorico Tapatio (traditional Mexican dance)

8 p.m.: Los Quatros Vientos (mariachi quartet)

9 p.m.: La Mezcla (Latin fusion)

10 p.m. & 11 p.m.: Santa Cruz River Band (Southwestern folk music)

6 p.m.: Mirror Image (twin sister jazz duo)
