TSO AND MTCVB PARTNER TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF LATINO MUSIC & ARTS
Fundacion Mexico Fundraiser to Generate Scholarship Funds from Sales of TSO ¡Fiesta! Tickets
(Tucson, AZ)-The Tucson Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with the Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitors Bureau MTCVB)Vamos a Tucson program, the Mexican Consulate and many of Tucson's valuable Hispanic organizations, have formed an alliance to increase awareness of Tucson's vibrant Latino music and arts within the Hispanic community, The first endeavor is the celebration of the rhythm and romance of Latin music which the TSO is presenting in a four program ¡Fiesta! in February and March, 2009.
The TSO presents a special music festival most seasons. This year the festival, ¡Fiesta!, will feature the great composers of Mexico, South America and Spain along with Latin-influenced works by Ravel, Respighi and Rimsky-Korsakov during two TSO Classic Series programs, a MasterWorks Chamber Orchestra program and two special, intimate "salon" evenings at the Tucson Symphony Center. Among the ¡Fiesta! highlights are performances by The Romero Guitar Quartet, "new tango" bandoneón master Daniel Binelli, guest conductor Jorge Mester and mezzo-soprano Kristin Dauphinais from the University of Arizona voice faculty. Latin dance rhythms that resonate the world over will be brought to life by dancers from the U of A School of Dance.
¡Fiesta! will open with a performance of Danzón no. 2, widely regarded as Mexico's second national anthem, by Sonoran-born composer Arturo Marquez and Maurice Ravel's popular Bolero. The MasterWorks program, Latin Flair, will include the world premiere of a new work by Paola Prestini, an award-winning Italian-born composer who is a former resident of Sonora. The two salons will feature TSO Music Director and Conductor George Hanson, Homero Ceron, TSO principal percussion and the Tucson Guitar Society.
A highlight of the collaboration will be the TSO's partnership with Fundacion Mexico. The TSO has reserved seats at a special discounted price for the Fundacion to sell at full price with proceeds to go to the Fundacion's Scholarship Fund. The partnership will be celebrated at a gala reception following The Romero Guitar Quartet's performance with the TSO at 8:00 pm on Friday, March 6, 2009. Reserve your tickets through February 27 at American Family Insurance, 2700 N. Oracle Road, Tucson, 85705, 300-5368, through committee members and at the MTCVB Hermosillo office.
In conjunction with the ¡Fiesta! the TSO will hold its biennial fundraising gala, the Art of Music, on Saturday, March 7 at 5:30 pm at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa, which will be attended by The Romeros. Grand prize winners of ¡Fiesta! contests in La Estrella and El Imparcial will receive concert tickets to The Romero Guitar Quartet performance on Friday, March 6 and the Art of Music, plus two free nights at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa. Watch the newspapers for details.
"We are excited to participate in this event that brings together groups and organizations with different backgrounds with the common goal of celebrating the Hispanic and Latino cultures," commented Felipe Garcia, Vice President of Community Affairs and Mexico Marketing MTCVB.
"The ¡Fiesta! is a great way to celebrate the TSO's 80th anniversary," stated Susan Franano, Executive Director of the TSO. "We want all residents including our neighbors in Sonora to be familiar with the TSO commitment to serve Tucson and southern Arizona communities with performances and orchestral music education programs of the highest caliber."
