Off I-10 at AZ Hwy. 80. Benson’s railroad past is preserved in its historic downtown and replicated train depot. Begin your visit with the Benson Historic Walking Tour, which begins at the San Pedro Valley Arts & Historical Society Museum (520-586-3070), formerly a grocery store and now on the National Register of Historical Places. Take a side trip to Gammons Gulch (520-212-2831), a recreated 1890s Old West town/mining camp and working movie set 8 miles north of Benson, about 12 miles off I-10. Information is available at the Benson Visitors Center (520-586-4293) in downtown.

888-457-3929, off AZ Hwy. 80. Visitor Center (4th and Allen) 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Arrive at first light to find the Wild West’s most famous town devoid of tourists. “The town too tough to die” also has charming architecture, quaint wooden sidewalks, and many original buildings. Early in the morning, look for wranglers hitching up teams for stagecoach tours. Just outside of town on AZ Hwy. 80 is the original Boothill Graveyard, containing about 250 grave markers, many with interesting epitaphs.

520-432-3554, 866-224-7233, off AZ Hwy. 80. Hours and attraction prices vary. Call for information. Allow a full day. This picturesque Victorian town of gingerbread houses perched on steep cliffs was once a rough and rowdy Old West mining camp. The natural landscape with mine tailings and steep hillside angles against the vibrantly colored buildings and signs provide interesting photo opportunities.
