533-5736, off AZ Hwy. 90 at exit 302, Sierra Vista, AZ. Free. Mon.–Fri. 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 1–4 p.m. Allow 2–3 hours. This active U.S. Army fort was built in 1877 and was home of the all-African American 92nd and 93rd Infantry Divisions during World War II. Home base of the 10th Cavalry unit, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers, 1913–31. The Fort Huachuca Historical Museum and the Military Intelligence Museum have excellent exhibits chronicling the significance of the military. While on post, be sure to visit the Fort Huachuca Historic Cemetery and Brown Parade Field.

Off I-10 to U.S. Hwy. 191, east of Dragoon, AZ. $3. Allow 3 hours. The rugged canyons here are famous as the place where famed Apache Chief Cochise based his operations. Some say he is buried in a canyon crevice here. A 2-hour hike leads from the campground through a maze of granite boulders.

520-847-2500, off AZ Hwy. 186, near Bowie, AZ. Free. Visitors Center 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Trails dawn–dusk. Hike 1.5 miles to reach ruins. Allow 3 hours. Historic Ft. Bowie was established to protect strategic Apache Pass. It gave protection to settlers and travelers during skirmishes with Apaches during the last half of the 19th century. Ruins and historical exhibits.
