Charles Mingus Hometown Music Festival
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Santa Cruz Advocates for the Arts Board has voted to postpone this year’s Charles Mingus Hometown Jazz Festival. This difficult decision was made after looking at the budget and recognizing the present difficulty of obtaining sponsors and donations to support the festival’s events. The Board has always tried to keep the festival events free or very inexpensive to encourage the most public participation.Ken Tittelbaugh, President of the Board, stated “this decision was very difficult for us, but under the circumstances, it was necessary.”One event that will still be held to continue the annual celebration commemorating the birthday of Charles Mingus, is the Friday night concert in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico as this concert has already been funded. The Friday Sonoran venue is the Cercum Plaza on Calle Obregon, April 8th at 7:00 pm. The Board has decided to focus on next year’s festival which will be held in the State of Arizona’s centennial year of 2012. However, there are plans to continue with this year’s Fall Jazz Festival containing jazz clinics for students and a public concert. The Board will continue raising funds for the Centennial Festival in April, 2012 with Kevin Mingus, Charles’ grandson, coming in to celebrate Charles’ 90th birthday with his new documentary. The Board is committed to going forward with renewed energy to make next year’s festival the most memorable yet. Submitted by Ken Tittelbaugh, Board President March 18, 2011
