[Tucson, Ariz., Jan 10, 2023—] FoR Fine Art galleries, a leading Old and New West art gallery with locations in Tucson and northwest Montana, is pleased to announce a new exhibit by award-winning ledger artist John Isaiah Pepion titled “The Sun Gave Us Power.”

“We’re thrilled to have John’s work in our gallery,” said Derek Vandeberg, founder and president of FoR Fine Art, “and we are especially excited to introduce Tucson to his incredible ledger art, a tradition that has been in his family for hundreds of years.”

In ledger art, a form of pictographic Plains art, all designs and colors have meaning. Indigenous people have shared and preserved their history in this way since the mid-19th century. These art pieces are beautifully executed using a variety of media such as ink, colored pencil, watercolor, pencil and antique ledger documents.

Pepion’s upcoming exhibit is made up of fifteen pieces of ledger art, including the focal piece, “The Sun Gave Us Power,” a visual narrative of the Blackfoot creation story of Scarface. Pepion explained, “Every piece has a sun in it or is themed around the sun. The sun is very important to a lot of Indigenous people, especially to the Blackfoot Confederacy.”

Other pieces in the collection include:

“The Lodge of the Sun”, 11” x 17”, Ink & Color Pencil “
Warrior of the Sun”, 11” x 17”, Ink and Color Pencil
“Eagle Whistle for the Sun”, 7 ½” x 12 ¼” Ink
“Antelope Society”, 5 5/8” x 8 5/8”, Ink and Color Pencil
“Magpies of the Sun”, 4 ½” x 8 ¼”, Ink & Color Pencil

FoR Fine Art has represented John Isaiah Pepion in their galleries since fall of 2021 and is honored to share the visual and educational knowledge of ledger art with their collectors and visitors. They look forward to introducing John Isaiah Pepion and his acclaimed work at the exhibit opening on Feb. 2 from 4-7 p.m. at FoR Fine Art, 6420 N Campbell Ave., Tucson.
