Tucson, AZ ---Cinema Tucsón, the cultural initiative featuring monthly screenings of Mexican films at the historic Fox Tucson Theatre, concludes its exciting fall 2022/spring 2023 season with the Arizona premiere of the acclaimed animated documentary Home Is Somewhere Else by Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos, screening on Wednesday, May 24 at 7pm, followed by a Q&A with co-director Hagerman.

A favorite at numerous festivals, including Annecy, Guadalajara, IDFA, Morelia, and the New York Children’s International Film Festival, Home Is Somewhere is a fascinating animated feature documentary offering a window into the hearts and minds of immigrant youth and their undocumented families. The film features three personal stories about immigrant youth to highlight the complexities and challenges they face today.

Voiced by the actual children and their families, the stories are woven together by spoken word poet Lalo “El Deportee,” the film’s host and MC whose vibrant “Spanglish” breaks codes, switches standards, and pushes the viewer to decipher his poems. Each story has its own unique visual animation style drawn by three different teams. The animation allows us to truly see and feel these characters’ worst nightmares, alongside their colorful hopes and dreams for a better future.

Cinema Tucsón is programmed by Carlos A. Gutiérrez and Vicky Westover and is presented by Cinema Tropical and the UA Center for Latin American Studies, in partnership with the Fox Tucson Theatre and the Consulate General of Mexico in Tucson. It is sponsored by Rio Nuevo, La Estrella Bakery, SplitSeed Productions, and the UA Department of Spanish & Portuguese. Media Sponsors are 92.5 FM Urbana, La Poderosa 105.3 FM, and KXCI 91.3 FM.
