The Fox Tucson Theatre has been approved for a $20,000 Grants for Arts Projects award to support the Women of Mariachi initiative at Fox Tucson Theatre. This project will support the presentation of artistically excellent, culturally significant, regionally relevant performances that showcase women trailblazers in the Mexican musical style of mariachi.  This special project is among 1,248 projects across America totaling $28,840,000 that were selected to receive this first round of fiscal year 2022 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects category.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects like this one from the Fox Tucson Theatre that help support the community’s creative economy,” said NEA Acting Chair Ann Eilers. “The Fox in Tucson is among the arts organizations nationwide that are using the arts as a source of strength, a path to well-being, and providing access and opportunity for people to connect and find joy through the arts.”

Fox Executive Director Bonnie Schock is pleased that the NEA is supporting this important project. “The Women of Mariachi project is designed to bridge tradition and innovation, inspire across cultural backgrounds, and lift up the accomplishments of Latina artists. It’s particularly meaningful that this program, featuring both established and rising star women Mariachi musicians, is the Fox’s first-ever project grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. That level of recognition of the artistic quality and cultural relevance of our current programming means a great deal, and we can’t wait to share it with Tucson.”

The Women of Mariachi project will begin with two world-class, women-led mariachi companies, one representing traditional mastery, the other pushing contemporary boundaries of the form. Flor de Toloache, an all-female emerging powerhouse group, winning accolades with an edgy, versatile, and fresh take on the traditions of mariachi will appear at the Fox on March 19.  The project will include a second event in October of 2022 featuring a trailblazing female icon of Mariachi music with details to be announced when Fox 22-23 season offerings are made public.  Each artist will perform a public concert of mixed repertoire, featuring new and favorite works, and will also participate in workshops/Q&A sessions designed to meet the needs of the many local Mariachi artists, including Tucson's own recently formed all-female Mariachi, Las Azaleas, and multiple amateur and semi-professional companies with longstanding venue relationships with The Fox.
