TUCSON, Ariz. (Dec. 5, 2024) – The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) has stepped in to rescue 37 small dogs from a single home in Marana. The dogs, believed to be Chihuahua mixes, range in age from just a few days old to about four years old.

The caregiver, who had become overwhelmed as breeding spiraled out of control, surrendered the dogs to Marana Animal Services, which facilitated their transfer to HSSA on Wednesday afternoon. Despite their challenging circumstances, the dogs are in good condition and are receiving the medical care they need – including spay and neuter surgeries as well as vaccinations.

“We’re grateful to be in a position to help these dogs,” said HSSA CEO Dr. Kristin Barney. “Thanks to the compassion of our community, we were able to act quickly and provide them with medical care they need before being adopted into new homes.”

The youngest puppies, some of whom are still nursing, have been placed with dedicated foster caregivers, where they will have the chance to grow and thrive. Meanwhile, several rescue groups have stepped forward to help, and HSSA’s veterinary team has begun spaying and neutering some of the other dogs, with some being made available for adoption as soon as tomorrow.

This lifesaving rescue was made possible thanks to community support during HSSA’s Giving Tuesday campaign, which raised over $60,000. “Your generosity is the reason we can respond so quickly when animals need us most,” said Barney.

HSSA is calling on the public to help ensure the continued success of this rescue effort and others like it. Through December 31, every donation to HSSA will continue to be triple matched, providing an opportunity for supporters to save three times as many lives.

“We are asking for the community to rally around these dogs,” Barney said. “Please adopt, foster, or donate so we can help them and other pets in need.”
