Oct 18, 10am - A Musical, Cinematic Journey through US and AZ History (grades 3-8)
It’s hard to imagine, but before TV and the Internet people learned about current events in the world by going to the movie theatre. There they would get a window into the happenings of the day via newsreels, which were shown alongside movies and cartoons. Frequently, these were musically accompanied, live, with a theatre organ. Students can now experience something like this for themselves! Through a combination of suitably spooky comedy film clips, cartoons, historic photos, and newsreel footage, students will get their own window into the early 1900’s of the United States—from the rise of cinema to the Great Depression and World War II. They will also glimpse how kids just like them, living in Tucson and coming to the Fox, experienced these aspects of history. Students will enjoy it all in the historic Fox Theatre and with historically authentic, live music! An acclaimed theatre organist will be on the stage, sharing about the mind-blowing Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ that has been restored to the Fox and playing it to accompany the film segments.
Oct 18, 7:30pm - Buster Keaton Silent Comedy Shorts - With LIVE Wurlitzer Organ Accompaniment
All ages will enjoy Buster Keaton’s comedy shorts: The Haunted House (27 min), The Balloonatic (27 min), and The Boat (25 min). With live accompaniment on the Fox’s Wurlitzer organ this is an evening not to be missed. As new generations discover the magic of silent cinema, Buster Keaton has emerged as one of the era’s most admired and respected artists. Behind the deadpan expression and trademark porkpie hat was a filmmaking genius who conceived and engineered some of the most breathtaking stunts and feats of visual trickery, while never losing sight of slapstick cinema’s primary objective: laughter.
Oct 19, 7:30pm - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - With LIVE Wurlitzer Organ Accompaniment
Considered by many to be the first great American horror film, John S. Robertson’s DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE allowed stage legend John Barrymore to deliver his first virtuoso performance on film. Blending historic charm with grim naturalism, this version of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE is one of the more faithful of the many screen adaptations of Stevenson’s story (though greatly influenced by T.R. Sullivan’s popular stage treatment), recounting a visionary scientist’s ill-fated attempts to unleash the human mysteries that dwell beneath the shell of the civilized self. Mastered in HD from a 35mm negative, with a wealth of bonus material, this Kino Classics edition beautifully showcases the dramatic brilliance and gruesome thrills of this influential silent classic.
Oct 23 - 7pm - Cinema Tucsón Presents: Caras Vemos (The Family)
Beto Gómez, Mexico, 2024, 103 min. In Spanish with English subtitles
The latest film by director Beto Gómez (Private Pérez, Flying Low) is a delightful comedy that follows an unconventional family caught in a peculiar body-swap after a mystical encounter with an ancient god. As a result, each family member finds themselves in someone else’s body: Laura, the mother, becomes a teenager obsessed with her phone and boyfriend; Luis, the father, is trapped in the body of his son, Dante; and the younger daughter takes over her father’s body. Meanwhile, in the body of Mariana, the teenage daughter, is her lethargic brother, and little Zoe becomes the wise mother. With a fantastic cast featuring Bruno Bichir, Mariana Treviño, Blanca Guerra, and Luis de La Rosa, the film balances comedic and heartfelt moments as the characters learn to appreciate and understand each other’s differences, realizing that love and family unity are what matter most.
