Tucson, March 7, 2022 – Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center and the Jewish Community Relations Council for Southern Arizona invite the entire community to join us for a very special event - Welcoming the Stranger: A Conversation with Mark Hetfield on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, 7:00 p.m. at the Tucson Jewish Community Center.
For over 100 years, HIAS (formerly known as Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) has provided vital services to refugees and asylum seekers around the world, advocating for their fundamental rights so they can rebuild their lives. Mark Hetfield, President and CEO, has led HIAS since 2013 and helped transform the organization, firmly rooted in Jewish values and tradition, from one of “helping refugees because they were Jewish to helping refugees because we are Jewish.”
A fierce advocate for refugees, Hetfield is proud of HIAS’s history of assisting and resettling refugees of all faiths and ethnicities as well as its role as a major implementing partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency and the U.S. Department of State. He is frequently invited to share HIAS’ work and his reflections as a writer and commentator for many diverse media outlets.
During this special evening, Mr. Hetfield will share updates on national and international refugee efforts, and also highlight local initiatives, such as the collaboration between HIAS and Jewish Family & Children Services of Southern Arizona that provides refugee resettlement services.
This free community event is a partnership between Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center, Jewish Community Relations Council for Tucson and Southern Arizona, Tucson Jewish Community Center and Jewish Family & Children Services of Southern Arizona.
