The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) Art Institute offers a variety of visual art programs throughout the year. Its fall 2019 semester is underway and classes run through December with varying class start-end dates.
Learning how to draw or paint, especially nature art, on the grounds and surroundings of the (ASDM) offers art students a special place and access to a beauty they wouldn't find anywhere else. There is a nature art certification program, but the museum's Art Institute also offers a catalog of classes every semester with classes that provide the basics from painting to drawing to photography, and there are classes for those with more experience. Those who are true animal lovers may even find themselves face-to-face with a live desert model brought in for a drawing class, a true desert art-making experience.
The Art Institute was founded in 2001 to promote conservation through art education. Exhibitions are displayed in the Ironwood Gallery and the Baldwin Education Building on grounds at the ASDM. The 98-acre ASDM is a fusion experience: zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, natural history museum, and aquarium. Unlike most museums, about 85 percent of the experience is outdoors. The ASDM is located 14 miles west of Tucson in Tucson Mountain Park, just two miles from the Saguaro National Park (West) Visitors Center.
