These days, every city claims to be a food destination. And, yes, if you want a great meal, you can find one in dozens of cities across the United States, plus in countless places around the world.

Tucson is no different – we champion the vibrant, chef-focused cuisine (featuring two James Beard Award winners), the wide variety of international spots, and our incredible Mexican food. However, what makes one city’s food more notable than another? Notice from national magazines? Accolades from bloggers? Tucson has those too, but hey, we also have recognition from UNESCO.

There are only 116 Member Cities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Creative Cities program – established in 2004 to promote cooperation between cities for “sustainable urban development” – and on December 11, 2015, Tucson became one of six Creative Cities in the United States, and the only one selected for Gastronomy.

Why Tucson? As the city’s press release puts it, we were selected for “our region’s rich agricultural heritage, thriving food traditions, and culinary distinctiveness." That's a lot to process, but in essence, it means that dining in Tucson is a unique experience, one that reflects the culture of the Sonoran Desert, from the soil to the people who live here.

You don't have to take a college class in the sociology of food to enjoy a meal here, but when you check out one of our great local restaurants, you'll notice that something's different. Also, if you're the sort of person who enjoys an alcoholic beverage, Tucson has you covered. A great craft beer? A cocktail? Perhaps even a glass of our local whiskey?

New York Magazine called Tucson “the Southwest’s next foodie destination.” Wine Enthusiast named Tucson one of 2016's Top Under-the-Radar Food Towns. Maybe it's time for you to see what everyone is talking about in Tucson?
