The oldest commercial vineyard and winery in Arizona, Sonoita Vineyards opened in 1983, and now includes over 30 acres of vines. Located 35-miles southeast of Tucson in Elgin, Sonoita Vineyards is a 25-acre vineyard situated on the south side of a hillside, surrounded by rolling grasslands. The Sonoita American Viticultural Area is a basin surrounded by three mountain ranges, the Huachuca Mountains, the Santa Rita Mountains, and the Whetstone Mountains. The vineyard plantings are 4,500 feet above sea level, some of the highest in North America.  This hillside planting protects the vines from harsh winds and frost.  The grape varietals grown at Sonoita Vineyards are Chardonnay, Mission, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Malbec.
