Tucson has always been home to incredible Mexican food, and over the years, more restaurants have embraced thoughtful, plant-based options. Growing up, I experienced Mexican food through my Nana Tania’s homemade meals—she made the best soups—my dad’s cooking, and big family parties filled with amazing food. Finding vegan Mexican food that carries that same warmth means everything to me.

Del Cielo Tamal, El Torero, Charro Vida, and Tumerico have been special to me for a long time—and while Copal is newer, I love it just as much as my old favorites. They’re not just places to eat but places that truly care about the food they serve and the people who walk through their doors.

Del Cielo Tamal

3073 N Campbell Ave

Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Del Cielo Tamal is the kind of place that makes you feel at home. They have a vegan and non-vegan menu, so it’s a great spot to bring friends with different dietary preferences.

Their vegan menu is packed with options—Vegan Machaca Plates, Chilaquiles, Omelets, Pancake Breakfasts, and more. My personal favorite? The Vegan Breakfast Plate with a Green Corn Tamale. There’s just something about starting the day with a warm tamale and a good cup of coffee.

Beyond breakfast, Del Cielo also serves incredible soups, like their Tortilla Soup, which is comforting and full of rich, deep flavors. Their outdoor patio makes it an easy spot to sit and stay awhile, and inside, the space feels warm and welcoming, with friendly staff who make you feel like a regular even on your first visit.

El Torero

231 E 26th St

El Torero has been a part of Tucson for decades, serving up comforting, home-style meals in a space that feels both familiar and welcoming. The soft pink building, with a few bougainvilleas near the entrance, adds to its charm.

Their vegan specials menu changes weekly, keeping things exciting. I recently had their Spicy Veg Ramen, and it was a perfect bowl of warmth and flavor—Arugula, Tofu, Potato, Elote, Mushrooms, Spinach, Cabbage, Noodles, Green Onion, Cilantro, Jalapeño, Cucumber, and fresh limes all coming together in a way that felt balanced and comforting.

They also make Green Corn Vegan Tamales that are always worth ordering when available—soft and the perfect balance of sweet and savory.

There’s something special about a restaurant that evolves with the times while still holding onto its roots, and El Torero does exactly that

Charro Vida

7109 N Oracle Rd

Charro Vida is the kind of place that makes you feel good about what you’re eating. Located on Tucson’s north side, it has a spacious outdoor patio perfect for brunch, lunch, or dinner.

Their menu is packed with vegan options, and they don’t feel like afterthoughts—they’re full, well-crafted dishes that stand on their own. Some of my favorites include the Hola Hemp Mini Chimis, Nachos Vida, and Vida Enchiladas.

Charro Vida takes a health-conscious approach to classic Mexican dishes while keeping all the flavors bold and satisfying.

Tumerico

2526 E 6th St

Tumerico is more than just a restaurant—it’s a space that feels alive with energy and creativity. This vegetarian spot’s menu constantly changes, but there are always plenty of vegan options to choose from.

When they have Tamales, they’re some of the best in town, made with Red Chile Jackfruit packed with flavor. One of my go-to orders is the Cuban Tacos, which I’ve had countless times and never get tired of.

They also have a great salsa bar filled with house-made salsas that add even more depth to every dish. Whether you like a bright, tangy salsa or something with a slow-building heat, there’s always something good to try.
Their dining space is also great for working or meeting with friends. I love grabbing a Mesquite Latte and settling in for a bit—it’s one of my favorites in town.

Copal Contemporary Mexican Cuisine

5340 E Broadway Blvd

Copal reimagines Mexican cuisine with vibrant, plant-based offerings that feel both intentional and indulgent. Dishes like the Cauliflower Ceviche and Mushroom Agua Chile Torre are vegan by design, while the Elote Ribs can be made vegan on request—each plate showcasing bold flavors and thoughtful preparation. The cocktail menu highlights fresh ingredients, and the patio swings outside add a playful, laid-back touch. Whether you’re there for a full meal or just drinks and small bites, Copal is the kind of place that makes you want to stay a little longer.
