Southern Arizona pours out big surprises: high-desert vineyards, family-run wineries and mellow drives through wide-open grasslands under endless desert sky. Two enchanting destinations sit within easy reach of Tucson. Sonoita and Elgin lie to the south and Willcox to the east, each shaped by altitude, sun and a landscape known for producing impressive wines. Sonoita and Elgin comprise Arizona's first American Viticultural Area, while Willcox, designated in 2016, now grows the lion's share of the state's grapes.
Why This Corner of Arizona Tastes Different

In these high-desert regions, days run warm and nights cool. Known as a diurnal shift, this daily temperature swing slows ripening and balances sugar development with natural acidity, producing flavorful, balanced and colorful grapes despite the desert sun. That mix, along with rocky soil (Sonita/Elgin) and gravelly soil (Wilcox), defines the local terroir and gives these Arizona wineries a crisp, spicy and vibrant style.
Two Easy Routes from Tucson
Sonoita and Elgin (about 52 miles, around 1 hour): Head east on I-10, then take exit 281 onto SR-83 South through scenic rolling grasslands to Sonoita. Elgin sits about 10 minutes farther east along Lower Elgin Road.
Willcox (about 86 miles, around 1 hour 20 minutes): Drive east on I-10. Take Exit 336 to Willcox, where many tasting rooms cluster on or near Robbs Road and downtown on Railroad Avenue. The journey reveals vast desert views beneath expansive blue skies.

Designate a Driver
With all the wine fun on your day trip, make sure to pick a sober driver or hire a local shuttle.
Know the Season
Arizona's official monsoon season runs from June 15 through Sept. 30, bringing fast-moving storms, lightning and often dust. Storms can also occur outside of this time range. Be sure to check forecasts before you go and watch for low-visibility bursts on open highways. Cooler, quieter months from late fall through spring are best for unhurried tastings and patio time. Bring enough warm clothing in the colder months.
Observe Posted Hours
Wineries and tasting venues in this region often close earlier than city spots, so confirm same-day hours and last-pour times before you go.
Pack Comfort
High-desert weather swings can be dramatic. No matter the season, pack extra layers, sun protection and plenty of water. Leave ample space for a few bottles to take home.
