TUCSON, Ariz. (August 21, 2026 ) — Main Gate Square will host Bear Down Fridays, a pair of free community pep rallies presented by Marshall Foundation, on Friday, Oct. 2 and Friday, Oct. 23, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at University Boulevard and Tyndall Avenue. Both nights are open to the public. No tickets or admission requirements are required. Details are available at maingatesquare.com.

 

A University Boulevard event for decades, Bear Down Fridays turns the district's block-long stretch of shops, restaurants and patios into the unofficial front porch of University of Arizona Wildcat weekends, which draws thousands of Tucsonans and out-of-towners, including students, alumni, families, visitors from around the country and city residents. Over the last several years, the Oct. 2 rally opens Family Weekend and the Oct. 23 rally sends the Wildcats into Homecoming Weekend. Each night features costumed mascots Wilbur and Wilma, the Pride of Arizona Marching Band, games, prizes and giveaways, food and drink specials at Main Gate Square merchants, and activities for all ages. Attendees are encouraged to wear red and blue, the official colors of the Arizona Wildcats. 

 

"Main Gate Square sits right at the border between campus and the city of Tucson. Bear Down Fridays are the nights where the line disappears and we – as a community – become unified in collegiate athletics," said Alexis Ryland, executive director of the Marshall Foundation. "This annual event allows students, alumni who graduated forty years ago, visitors and Southern Arizona families who just drove in for the weekend to gather and support UA teams. Our district makes it possible, where every meal and retail purchase assists in grants funding and scholarships, allowing The Marshall Foundation to put it right back into the community.” 

 

Past rallies have drawn guest appearances from Arizona football coaches and players, athletic directors and other University of Arizona head coaches. In 2024, the Foundation consolidated the series into October, a change made to sidestep the heat of the early-season months and place the rallies on the two weekends that draw the most families and alumni back to Tucson.

 

“Bear Down Friday is about creating and strengthening Wildcat pride while helping students, campus partners, and community members feel connected to the University of Arizona and to one another, said Chrissy Lieberman, Dean of Students. “We’re especially proud of ZonaZoo and its continued collaboration with the Marshall Foundation.”

Bear Down Fridays is produced in partnership with ZonaZoo, the University of Arizona's student spirit organization, whose members help stage the rallies and lead the crowd on both nights.
