TEMPE/TUCSON, Ariz. – (February, 2026) – Arizona Theatre Company’s (ATC) 58th season continues with an intimate but powerful team of cast and creatives in The Roommate, the hit play that premiered on Broadway last season.
When a tame Midwestern empty nester opens her home to a new roommate from the Bronx, they bond over shared experiences and tiptoe around their differences – until those differences become unavoidable. The Roommate embodies the thrilling and messy experience of two people living together for the first time. Although both women have years of wisdom, they discover they’re not as set in their ways as they thought.
The Roommate comes to ATC with the same heart as its Broadway production through Marsha Mason, who was Associate Director alongside ATC Georgie Award and Tony winning director Jack O’Brien. This will mark the third production that Mason, a four-time Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actor, has directed at Arizona Theatre Company. Previous shows include An Act of God (2016) and Chapter Two (2017), written by her former husband Neil Simon.
Joining Mason are two powerhouse actors – Sara Gettelfinger and Angela Pierce. Gettelfinger previously starred on Broadway in last season’s Water for Elephants, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Nine. Pierce has appeared on hit television shows and movies such as The Blacklist, The Delinquent, Law & Order, as well as in multiple Broadway productions.
“How often do you get to have one of the original directing team of a Broadway show come and put up the same show in your hometown?” August said. “This is regional theatre at it’s finest. We’re in for a special treat with this one, and we couldn’t be more excited bring Marsha Mason back to ATC.”
Mason notes that she’s excited to return to Arizona. “It feels truly special to me. I had such wonderful experiences directing An Act of God and Chapter Two here, and the collaboration with the remarkable staff in both Tucson and Phoenix made those productions especially memorable. I’m thrilled to come back to direct the Broadway hit The Roommate. It’s a smart, surprising, and deeply human play, and there’s no better place to explore its humor and heart than with the talented artists and audiences at ATC.”
ATC’s The Roommate runs March 15 through April 4, 2026, in Tucson at the Temple of Music and Art (330 S. Scott Ave.) and April 11 through April 26, 2026, in Greater Phoenix at the Tempe Center for the Arts (700 W. Rio Salado Pkwy.). Tickets start at $33 and are available now at atc.org or by calling 1-833-ATC-SEAT.
