Tucson, Ariz., February 3, 2026 — Hot diggity dog, it is time to put that January detox behind us! Today marks the official debut of Tucson’s Sonoran Dog Trail, a new self-guided culinary trail celebrating one of Southern Arizona’s most iconic and beloved foods: the Sonoran hot dog.
The Sonoran Dog Trail invites locals and visitors alike to explore Tucson through its vibrant food scene, connecting a curated collection of hot dog stands, restaurants, and neighborhood favorites that each offer their own take on the regional classic. Known for its bacon-wrapped hot dog tucked into a bolillo-style bun and topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, mustard, mayonnaise and jalapeño sauce, the Sonoran dog is a symbol of Tucson’s rich borderlands culture.
The hot dog is a timeless American icon, rooted in tradition yet constantly evolving as chefs across the country reinterpret it through regional flavors and techniques. And what better way to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, Americana and a classic summer road trip than an exploration of the diverse cultures that inspire our cuisine and shape our country like Tucson's Sonoran Dog Trail?
“The Sonoran Dog Trail is about more than food—it’s about community, heritage and supporting local businesses,” said Cindy Aguilar, Vice President of Communications. “This trail gives people a fun, flavorful way to experience Tucson’s unique culinary identity while exploring different neighborhoods across the city.”
Participants can follow the trail at their own pace, discovering longtime staples like BK Tacos and James Beard Award recipient El Guero Canelo, as well as hidden gems including El Sinaloense and Pecheron. The trail, available as a web app, is designed to be accessible, family-friendly, and welcoming to both residents and out-of-town food lovers.
The launch of the Sonoran Dog Trail further reinforces Tucson’s reputation as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and home to “America’s Best Mexican Food” and highlights the city’s deep-rooted food traditions and fusion influenced by Mexican, Indigenous, and Southwestern cultures.
