The Fort Lowell Museum is now open and being operated by staff at Tucson’s downtown Presidio Museum Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm.  In addition to regular operating hours, the museum will hold monthly Living History and family events as well as walking tours of the neighborhood.

 

This month, History in the Park will be held Jan. 6 from 10 am-1 pm.  Attendees will enjoy displays and demonstrations covering:

**The 1800s frontier army

**Residents of Fort Lowell

**Blacksmithing 

In addition, guided tours of the Fort Lowell Park and the museum with interpreters in period dress will be offered at 10:30 and 11:30 am.  This event is included in admission.

 

Guided walking tours of the Fort Lowell Neighborhood will be held on Jan. 8 and 22 from 10 am to 12 pm.  The Fort Lowell area is much more than the territorial fort.  If you understand the history of the area, you understand the history of Arizona.  Historian and preservationist Ken Scoville leads this tour delving into the cultural layers of Tucson.  Pre-registration for these tours is required at www.TucsonPresidio.com/walking-toursThe cost is $20/member, and $30/non-member.

 

The Family Funday theme this month is Find the Thief.  Someone has stolen a necklace from one of the soldiers’ wives at the fort.  Attendees will use clues given at activity stations to find out who the thief is. Tinsmithing may also be included. This event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 am-1 pm and is included in admission

 

Fort Lowell was a military supply post active from 1873 to 1891. The museum is located in Fort Lowell Park at 2900 N. Craycroft Rd. in an 1880s reproduction adobe officers’ quarters. Visitors see displays about the purpose and history of the fort, its soldiers and their families, In addition, displays are included about the Apache of the region and the pre-history of the area seen at the nearby Hardy site. The museum is open from 9 am to 2 pm Thursdays through Saturdays. Admission to the museum is $3/person and free for those five and younger and Fort Lowell and Presidio Museum members are free.
